Heard This Before?

I find that more and more often I am one of those older folks (that not too long ago I would giggle at)..you know the ones who say things like: I remember when…. or When I was a kid….. I thought I’d never get there, but I so have! The other day, Hubbie sent me a list of “Things You Don’t Hear Anymore” and I was relating to almost all of them! Do you recognize any of these?

Don’t go outside with your school clothes on! I grew up going to public school and didn’t wear a uniform but there was definitely a big difference in our school clothes and our play clothes…and my mother was none too happy to find you playing after school before you had changed your clothes.

Go comb your hair. It looks like a rat’s nest! So, my mother.

Put a dish towel over the cake so the flies won’t get on it. Makes perfect sense to me.

You’ve torn the knees out of the pants so many times there is nothing left to put a patch on. Okay, I even tried to patch one of my boy’s pants when they were younger and I couldn’t even find patches anymore. Patches are now decorative accessories.

Don’t forget to wind the clock before you go to bed. I’m not kidding…my children even have to stop and think when they have to READ an “old-fashioned” clock – not digital!

Wash your feet before you go to bed…you’ve been playing outside all day barefooted. I’m wondering if we were that dirty, why didn’t we just take a bath??

Open the back door and see if we can get a breeze through here; its getting hot. We bought a house with central air conditioning when I was in 8th grade and thought we had moved into “high cotton”. It had a dishwasher too!!

You can walk to the store; it won’t hurt you to get some exercise. My friends and I loved going to the store for our moms. We usually rode our bikes. We rode our bikes everywhere and stayed outside all day long – unattended. Our moms never “worried” about us. (Life was good.)

Don’t sit too close to the TV; its hard on your eyes. OR Don’t cross your eyes; they will stick that way. Too funny.

And two of my personal favorites:

If you get a spanking in school and I find about it, you’ll get another one when you get home. Indeed. And,

If you pull that stunt again, I’ll wear you out! A total classic. I so hope my brother is reading this!! 🙂 Have a memory-filled weekend!

  1. Oh I love this list!!! I use to love going to the store for my mom also. It was two blocks away and sometimes I would take my bike, other times walk.

And yes, my kids have trouble reading an old fashioned clock as well!

    Great list!

  2. They all make perfect sence to me! In fact, we still say stuff like that around home! I wish we all could go back to that time ~ less hurried, family oriented, down home common sence!
When I was younger (I can't remember back that far!) I rode my horse to the store. Way too fun! Rode to school once too, on the last day!(School was about 6 miles from home)
Washing your feet before you go to bed! Because we only took a bath on Saturday night ~ wether we needed it or not! :~O
    Blessings!

  3. Oh my goodness I recognize every one. We really must have had similiar moms. Here was one of my mom's fsvorites. "Go outside and play, just find something to do, or I will find something for you to do in here." haha I haven't heard that rat's nest one in a while, haha Have a wonderful week-end. Hugs, Debbie

  4. Hi Jenn,
Yea, I remember a lot of those things being said as well. I used to go to the store all the time for my Mom too, and either walked or road my bike. How funny! That was our era I guess! It was a great era at that!!
Yea, my son is very excited. He found out today that he can't take his grill tho, so that was bummy,
but his sister has it, so he will just have to run around the corner and grill and bring it home. Think that was disappointing cause he loves to grill! Oh Well…….

Yea, I think we will have some fun with the guest bedroom again. One time I moved Jim and I over there for a week cause we couldn't go on vacation and we have remodeled that bathroom about 4 years ago.
(We were in the middle of that
when Jim had his heart surgery)
so we had never used it so I thought we are gonna take a vacation without leaving home, so
we just pretended to be on vacation cause we were sleeping in another room and using another bathroom, that was brand new, so it was like being in a hotel.
So it gave us a nice change!! lol

Sometimes you just have to be creative with life, ya know!

Oh about the cooking, I am not always thrilled with it, but one thing does motivate me and that is finding new recipes to try. I have learned to do quick recipes that don't take a lot of time cause they usually don't turn out well for me! So if I can make it
quick and it is delicious, I am a happy girl!! I am glad I inspire you tho, that was such a sweet and encouraging thing to say, I appreciate that very much.
I also get these things over email from kraft foods, and I get a lot of good recipes from them. If you would like the email address so you can sign up I will send it to you, just let me know if you want it!!
Have a great day, and remember don't sit too close to the tv I don't want you to go blind!! lol
    Blessings hon!

  5. Hello Jennifer…thank you for visiting me at Life By George. And thanks for the nice comment!
I look forward to getting to know you better. I enjoyed this post…yes, I remember alot of those sayings! I'm truly sorry about your son, my heart broke as I read about him, but also rejoiced because one of these days, you'll be reunited to never be parted again.

    Have a blessed weekend.

  6. Hi Jen! I agreed with the one about washing feet because I feel like I'm washing Riley's a lot these days! She will sneak out on the back porch without shoes on and her feet get dirty right away. I REALLY want to get a wooden step stool for the bathroom and this way she can stand on it and wash her hands and then I can plop her up to do her feet.

Anyways, I read your comment on my blog and yeah, you're right. I'll have to teach her "Deep and Wide!" She will LOVE that one, especially the hand motions 🙂 This is the perfect age for that song! Great idea 🙂

    Love ya!

    Erica

  7. Love, love the list…and my, my don't they sound familiar! 😉
about the 30 day shred (sorry it has been so long since I have replied, but the boys aren't taking naps anymore so my computer time has dramatically decreased. I like Jillian's tape better than her in the TV series. She doesn't use any bad language and doesn't scream at you. It is really hard, but 20 minutes isn't so bad. Have a blessed day sweet friend!
