It’s Friday! I hope your week has been a good one and that you are looking forward to the weekend. My weekend, as far as holiday plans are concerned, started last night. A friend and I went to a local, community theater and saw Scrooge, the Musical. It was super cute and had a lot of really good music. Definitely a fun evening. Tonight, hubbie and I are going with some friends to see the Gettys and their Irish Christmas Tour. I’m not familiar with the Gettys but have heard so many exciting things about this concert. And we are trying a “new to me” restaurant in DC that I’ve been wanting to try for some time – so, it should be a great night. Tomorrow, another Holiday Market and Craft Show. One we really enjoy and in Old Towne Alexandria…another favorite. Sunday, we will have our church Christmas luncheon. So, much to look forward to in the next few days!!
But, for the rest of this post, I thought I would include a few of the most random of things. They don’t really fit into a blog post anywhere else but if I titled it something like “Random Things on Friday,” well then, it works, right? Humor me:)
plain ravioli – on our train ride last Friday, there were not a lot of vegetarian/meatless options. Only one, really. So, I chose the cheese ravioli. It was served with brussels sprouts cooked in bacon. Big thick pieces of bacon. Clearly not a vegetarian meal. Just an entree. But I like cheese ravioli; however, I have never had these pasta rounds served “as is.” Without any type of sauce – whether on it or even to dip it in. Not even melted butter. Just five boiled cheese-filled ravioli. Just wondering….is that a thing? Have you ever been served something similar??
no phone policy – our local school districts (apparently it is state-wide) is going to begin a no phone policy in the public schools. I don’t have children in school anymore, and when mine were in school, cell phones were not “a thing,” but I still found this so interesting. I do remember a situation when, after my children had graduated, and I was on staff at my church’s school. Cell phones were becoming more and more of an issue in classes (and they were definitely an issue, at least back then), and a few teachers tried to implement policies that phones would be left at the door. This received so much pushback (from parents) and battle (from students), it was decided that students must be allowed access to their phones. At all times, apparently. I thought it was ridiculous. Apparently, it only took 10 years and a state bill for someone to finally agree with me!
a simple black slip – do you know what I’m even talking about? If not, you are probably in the majority. I needed a new slip. As in a silky garment worn under skirts. For anti-static and modesty purposes too. Trying to find a slip, in stores, became a bit comical. I think they have just about gone the way of the corset. By the way, (for those who were wondering) the definition of corset: a support garment worn to hold and train the torso into the desired shape and posture. Oh, to train my torso into the desired shape!!
santa or Father Christmas – which one is it? My husband has a collection of these, um, men in heavy coats carrying arm loads of gifts or other Christmas necessities. Not one has a red, fur-lined suit. So are they Santas? I call them Father Christmas but, honestly, I am not 100 percent sure what that exactly means. What would you call this cute guy? He is wearing a white coat trimmed in brown fur but he is carrying gifts. And a cardinal. I dunno. But if you like that one, we have at least a dozen more I could show you! Maybe next time…you can thank me now.
Have a beautiful weekend, friends!!
I enjoyed this post. Firstly, wow I can’t imagine how much fun it would be to live so close to DC – especially at Christmas as well the surrounding area.
Regarding the plain ravioli – not even a brown butter sauce or broth? I would have asked for sauce. Unless this is a new trend from the East coast.
I just looked – they have slips at Macys, JC Pennys. It is dying out like panty hose. Back when I was young, you never went bare legged unless it was summer or you had beautiful skin.
I can’t imagine my three sons with phones when they were in HS 90’s till 2003. I was single patenting at the time and couldn’t afford it – told them if they wanted them they’d have to get jobs. They got jobs but funny how they weren’t that interested using their money. They probably would have never graduated!
Santa or Father Christmas – I have no idea. St Nick? Do show us some photos. Don’t know if Ive seen them with brown fur.
Enjoy your weekend!
It sounds like your weekend is off to a festive start! I hope your plans continue to go well. The plain ravioli sound good to me- I am not a big sauce fan. But it does seem odd to be served that way. I had a black slip in my dresser drawer and Alyssa mentioned seeing it and thinking it was a skirt! I am glad your state is going cell phone free in schools. Let’s make common sense common again!
Yay for the no phones in school. I know exactly what you mean by a slip, and I used to have a few. Now that you mention it, I haven’t seen them in forever! None of my daughters wore them, and I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that they don’t wear nylons anymore? And, I have nothing to base this on, but I think that is Father Christmas. Santa definitely has a big belly and a red suit. : )
Ravioli: looks better than it tastes, most of the time. I would definitely want a sauce over mine.
I have a big collection of slips that I’ve had for decades. Seldom worn anymore, but I have room for them in my closet and when I need one, it’s necessary. I didn’t know they are becoming scarce, so this information is all the more reason for me to keep mine.
A couple of years ago I discovered that knee-high stockings (such as what we used to buy in those plastic eggs), are also hard to find. I take good care of the pairs I still have because I wear them from time to time in the winter with slacks and pumps (shoes).
Our world is changing so very fast in so many areas.
I have always thought kids shouldn’t have phones in school but I have heard some compelling arguments from parents about school shootings -that they would want their child to be able to reach them/say goodbye. A very sad commentary on our society”s priorities 🙁
A gave up a long time ago on finding a or the right slip and have gone instead to a slip short. But yeah, I understand what you are saying…sigh…getting old(er) is not for sissies, that is for sure. Wishing you a beautiful Saturday evening…and yes, I have had plain ravioli before.
Sounds like a delightful weekend ahead with lots of fun plans! I love the randomness in your post – from ravioli curiosities to the slip hunt! Wishing you a lovely time at the holiday events! You’re invited to read my blog posts whenever you get a chance – I’d love to share more with you!
The school districts around here are doing the no phones thing too. I appreciate that I can contact my kids during the day, but I don’t mind them not being allowed phones in class! A week or so ago, there was a gun brought to the local high school and people on Facebook were saying this is why their kids need their phones – meaning to tell their parents about it during the day? Or maybe to call the police. Hmm.
