Happy Monday friends…and, if you are so inclined, Happy St. Patrick’s Day:) Are you wearing green today? I mentioned a few posts back that I wasn’t sure I was “allowed” to celebrate today. I know it is, technically, a religious holiday (one I do not observe) and I don’t think I am Irish either, but you know, regardless, I decided to have a little fun with it this year. After all the sacrifices I made last week – to search out just the right pie bakery – in the name of blog research, well, I decided this past weekend to look for a delicious Irish meal. I was surprised to find there were not many options (and not much research would be happening). We were not willing, or wanting, to go downtown (I guess we would not go “the extra mile” even for the blog – lol) so that certainly narrowed our options. But we did find one. And so we went.
This local restaurant is called Auld Shebeen, which the best I can decipher means “an old bar or drinking establishment.” I probably should have looked that up before we went. I don’t mind (too much) a restaurant that has a bar in it. Most of them do. However, if a place looks more like a bar with a restaurant attached, we tend to leave. This was not exactly that but it was pushing my level of comfort, but since we were there early – and for the blog:) – we decided to stay.
Let me tell you, I had the fish and chips…and they were amazing. Some of the best I have ever had! Unfortunately, my husband ordered the shepherd’s pie which should be a no-brainer for an Irish restaurant, right? It was not very good. Actually, it was bad and, sadly, I’m not sure we will ever go here again. But, the fish and chips!! I will be sad to never enjoy those again. We also had an incredibly delicious pretzel before our meal which seems more German than Irish but my husband really liked it. Maybe I can get him to return just to enjoy a pretzel while I have a meal:)
All that to say, we have already celebrated March 17th as much as we will celebrate. No more green food or other green fun around here. But I thought I could finish this post with a little green – or St. Patrick’s Day – fun. A little Irish inspired This or That. Totally, just for the fun! And after that, I think I will be done with blog research for a while. Investigative reporting is time consuming. And full of extra calories!! I think I will return to regularly-scheduled blog posts…at least, for a little while.
Whether you care about St. Patrick’s Day or not, I hope you have a fun Monday. I hope it is the start of good week for you and that you will return later in the week. I will be posting again on Thursday this week. Now, for a little fun. Answers for me….
Find a pot gold. Not sure what I would do with it, but who needs a leprechaun.
Wear green forever. Green is my favorite color:)
Speak Gaelic. I love learning new languages. I’m terrible at it but I still enjoy trying.
Eat green food. Would most likely be vegetables and I love vegetables!!
Shamrock shake. Don’t know that I have ever had one but it has the word shake in it:)
Four leaf clovers. Reminds me of a carefree childhood.
Um, have good luck forever. I guess!
Eat potatoes daily. Especially if they were french fried!! (They are my weakness lately!)
Travel to Ireland. Is probably number two on my bucket list. Please…some day. Let me visit Ireland!!
Green pasta. Again, probably has veggies in it.
Be lucky.
Find a gold coin. That would be fun. But would I even recognize it was real or not?? Who knows:)
Fun post to read- you are doing so much in the name of the blog- love it!! It’s funny, I’ve only had Shepard’s pie once and it was at an Irish restaurant and I didn’t care for it either. Maybe go back to the restaurant but convince your husband to order the fish (if he likes fish!) that you liked so well. I do nothing to celebrate St. Patrick’s day but I do enjoy reading about how others do. I hope your Monday is a great one!
Good idea, Maria. Hope you are enjoying this pretty Monday morning as well!
My husband and I both have a little Irish in our ancestry and do celebrate the holiday just for fun. Irish or not it’s a day everyone can participate in … you just have to wear green 🙂 I’m sorry your husband did not have a good experience with his meal. I enjoyed your post today. Happy St. Paddy’s Day!
Thanks, Dawn!! Enjoy your bit of fun today!:)
Happy St Patrick’s Day to you and yes I am wearing a little bit of green although it wasn’t planned that way especially. I don’t have any Irish heritage as far as I know but my little knitted leprechaun is sitting on my mantelpiece for a few days.
Hooray for a little leprechaun making you smile from the mantel!:)
Wow…I’m surprised that the Shepherd’s Pie was not good at this establishment. We went out for lunch today and I had fish and chips. Yummy! I brought over half of my meal home with me, as did my husband.
Enjoy your break from being an investigative reporter now. 🙂
I didn’t really know much about St. Patrick until I read a post by a fellow blogger explaining some history. I have always felt the day gets portrayed as a day to drink yourself silly. I saw Chicago dyed their river green. I wonder how the day is celebrated in Ireland.
