Hello Monday and welcome Winter Storm Fern. Okay, I’m not sure she was actually welcomed around here but, either way, she showed up! Just as predicted, I might add. Started with several inches of snow and then several hours of sleet/freezing rain on top of the snow. Not a pretty combination. I’m not exactly sure how much actual snow we received. It was blowing so much…that the tops of our fence look bare but I know that is
not the reality. The rest of the patio has quite a pile of snow. But, all in all, Storm Fern was not the worst for us. It does help that we are in the retired season of life and hunkering down inside (with no pressure to try and get out) is easy to do. My son had to work all day yesterday. He commute is not far but the roads were terrible (thank you ice!) and I was glad when he was home. And grateful that he has tomorrow off! There was also just enough snow in North Carolina to bring smiles to my little buddy, Tyler:) That is the best part of snow. (That and snow days for all the kiddos. And their teachers!) But the weekend was not competely all about snow. Almost but not quite. Let me take a quick look back at the weekend.
ONE – Friday, I was feeling almost giddy (maybe not giddy but super relieved and happy) as I was hearing again after seven weeks of incredibly diminished hearing. That was a blessing! I explained it a bit here, if you missed it. I had lunch with a friend on Friday afternoon and I actually heard every single thing she said! It was wonderful. She is moving on Thursday so our lunch was “bittersweet” for me. The deeper I get into this season of life (getting old), the more I struggle when relationships change. That was evident for me on Friday. All the more reason I’m glad that I could really enjoy our conversation. On Friday night, we had game night at church. There was a good crowd, plenty of (friendly) competition and even some King Hawaiian sliders:) Oh, and that grocery store grand opening on Friday morning (that I mentioned last week)?? Apparently, it was huge success but I can only assume. We went. But we could not get in. There was not a parking space anywhere. Even the firelanes were full?! Determined shoppers were using a nearby commuter parking lot and walking over to the store. I was curious. But not that curious. We left but we did go back on Saturday which was a brilliant decision on our part!
TWO – After checking out the new grocery store, Saturday turned into an errands day. I had the idea that a couple of snow days would be a great time to start a home project. I have been wanting to paint our bathroom cabinets but have simply been procrastinating. For some reason, I was now ready. And off to Lowe’s we went for a paint sample and supplies. We met about 150 other Lowe’s shoppers who apparently just got the memo that snow was coming. They were clammering for icemelt (there was none), shovels (there were a few) and who knows what else. Lately, my timing has not been the best when going out and about. That said, the bathroom cabinet project begins today. I’m not a tremendous painter but surely I can handle some cabinets. It does help that no ladder climbing will be involved!
THREE – Ok, that brings me back to Sunday. And the winter storm. I know there are many (thousands) really negatively impacted by this storm. And I am not minimizing that in any way. Sincerely. For us, though, it was a cozy day tucked inside. And can I just say how much we enjoyed bird watching yesterday?! Our backyard feeder was standing room only. And the cardinals finally returned. I have not seem them in months. Right around mid-day, the feeder was empty. Our feathered friends had completely finished it. It was right about the time that the freezing rain was at its heaviest. So messy. And so cold! My sweet hubby bundled up and trekked outside just to refill the feeder. I’m telling you – he is a keeper! It only took about fifteen minutes before that feeder was covered once again!
I am also thankful for livestream. I can be a bit critical of livestream but, I have to admit, it was a blessing yesterday. We were able to watch both a morning and an evening service. Both were great messages. So, I am trying to adjust my opinions.
So, how was your weekend? How did you fare with the storm? Maybe your part of the country completely missed. Lucky you:) If Storm Fern was part of your weekend, what is something you are grateful for through the storm? And here’s looking for a calmer week ahead, weatherwise. It is not supposed to get warm around here. Not sure how soon much ice is going to melt. I hope you will stop by again later this week. It is almost the end of the month!! Wow –
We were relieved that we only received 4-5 inches of snow from Fern. Of course, we had a layer of sleet on top of the snow (the sleet/freezing rain was earlier than expected here). I am thankful we have a tractor that can be used as a snow blower or plow. The husband is currently out taking care of the neighbors at the end of our road as he uses the snow blower to clear our road. It will be an at home day today enjoying the quiet along with getting out for brief bits of time to play the in/out game with Max. Stay warm and be cozy today, Jennifer.
How lovely that you were able to fully enjoy your get together with your friend before she moves away.
Just looking at pictures of your storm weather makes me feel cold! I definitely would be hibernating indoors until the last remnants of it had melted away – keep safe and warm!
Hello!!! We also had a nice hibernating cozy weekend indoors. Thank the Lord we didn’t get worse or lose power. I am so thankful!!!
Have a super blessed week!
Hello! I am glad you are safe and sound, my friend. We were hoping to see some snow here in Maryland, but ended up with good old-fashioned rain! Of course, we were still snuggled in, cozy as can be. Have a cozy week!
Hooray for the return of your hearing! What a huge answer to prayer!! We were in the path of Fern and she dumped over a foot of snow on us. Everything came to a grinding halt and still sort of is, though our street is plowed. There’s just a lot to get rid of and temperatures are going to be super low this whole week. But we’ll get by :). I was disappointed that our pastor didn’t Livestream a service. There was just… no church. Glad your son made it safely to and from work. Ice is no joke!
Well, I am so relieved and happy to hear that your hearing has returned and that it enabled you to enjoy the conversation at the lunch on Friday with your friend who will be moving. Answered prayer!
As you saw when you visited this morning, I posted that we had about 3 inches of snow from the storm. Right after that it started snowing again and now, we are up to around 8 inches. We are still quite content because we have power and we have a wood stove that puts out heat to keep us warm. My heart goes out to all those who have lost power due to ice.
We enjoyed and continue to do so, watching the birds at our feeders also. It doesn’t take them long to empty them. And the suet disappears about as fast as the bird feed. 🙂
Happy painting, my friend. xx
We too just stayed in doors. We played games, watched movies, slept a little extra and caught up on things.
So great to read about your hearing.. that must be so wonderful.
We got lots and lots of snow but it definitely wasn’t the worse we’ve seen. But it has been awhile since we’ve spent 2 full days inside (well other than the 2 that went out plowing but that is pretty standard!). Our snow was mostly yesterday and today so we spent Saturday running errands, making sure the generator was all set to go just in case and then ended with a date night. I’ve come down with quite the cold so two days at home lazing on the couch felt wonderful.
We didn’t get snow here in my part of Texas (well, some tiny flurries), but it’s colder than we are used to and we got lots of rain. It did keep us tucked inside for the weekend and by Monday I was having cabin fever. We’re supposed to get another arctic front on Friday. Not a fan. I’m glad your hearing has returned! Have a cozy week 🙂
Such great news about your improved hearing! That’s an answer to prayer.
The ice storm has sure kept me indoors but thankfully it wasn’t as bad in my area as was anticipated. We didn’t lose power but so many here in TN were affected.
That is going to be one very popular grocery store! It was that way when a Buckee’s opened up not to far from here. My son and daughter in law went to see it and couldn’t find a parking space!
I sure appreciate our church’s live stream as well. It was handy this Sunday because I went nowhere!
Have a great week.
