Happy Friday! I’m a bit late getting today’s post up but I suppose that will happen once a month (let’s be honest, it could happen more often than that but for certain once a month) as I want to write at least one Five Minute Friday post each month. I don’t know the prompt until Friday morning so nothing is written and/or scheduled to post the night before. Not a big deal, but I know there are several who come by the blog early in the morning (the champion bloggers!) and I mention it just to excuse myself. Mornings like this one, I feel like I am tardy and in need of a pass. Silly me.
This mornings’ prompt is LONGING. Often thought of as a strong yearning or waiting for something to happen or to be fulfilled. Like most Christians, I long for Heaven. For Christ’s return and to see all of Heaven’s glories fulfilled. That is often described as longing for home. But, let’s be honest, in the meantime (while we are “just passing through,” as the songwriters have said), we long for much here as well. I was thinking about those things earlier as I pondered the prompt. There are things, even today, that I long to see happen. Loved ones to come to Christ. For a relationship to be restored. For healings, mercy, confidence regained and more than a few dreams to become a reality. And sometimes, truthfully, I long to have my own way. I can grow weary when longings feel unrealistic or even worthless. Yes, there was much on my mind this morning.
However, the Five Minute Friday posts are intended to be quick (five minute) writings that are not over-thought and/or over complicated. So, I put those longing thoughts aside and have a slightly different direction for this writing exercise.
START – I have been digging into I Peter on Tuesday mornings with my Bible study group. Just this week, we ended our study with I Peter 1:12 which ends with a summary of Peter’s encouragment to believers. He has reminded them of the mercy they have been offered, of the truth of Christ’s resurrection and the eternal inheritance that is theirs because of that truth. And then, perhaps to emphasize just how glorious all of that is, he says even the angels long to look into these things. The angels are longing. This longing is a bit different than a yearning, but is more of an eager desire. The angels, who have never been separated from Christ or dead in their sins (and forgiven), can only imagine what amazing grace is like. What it means to restored, to be offered an home in Heaven or to know “joy unspeakable” because of His mercy. But they (the angels) know is wonderful and they long to understand. What a powerful reminder, to me, of just how precious my salvation is!
STOP – You cannot say much in only five minutes. But I hope you come away encouraged….or perhaps intriqued about the gift of salvation. Just like the angels. Either way, I’m saying a quick prayer for all those who stop by this space of mine today. Thanks for being here.
Hello, my friend, and happy Friday to you! I enjoyed reading here today…especially that you referenced 1 Peter. One of my very most favorite verses comes from that book…1 Peter 5:10. You did a wonderful job of presenting “longing” in a way that will give us food for thought today. Thanks so much! We are having snow, as I type.:)
Thank you, Dianna. You are an encouragement! And, the flurries just started here:)
What a wonderful perspective to think of the angels longing to look into Jesus’ redemption of the earth. We are in heavenly company when we long for Jesus to return and bring healling!
We are, indeed, Anna. I like that thought!
This is a fun way to think of this. Thanks for the food for thought on this snow [icy roads] day. 🙂
Thanks, Pam. And I am glad that you came by the blog today!
I completely forgot about 5 Minute Fridays! I’m going to do that straight away. Thanks for the reminder.
Glad to help:) And I enjoyed your post…and visiting your blog! Glad you stopped by today!
That was beautiful!
Thank you, Debby. You are too kind!
It is so true – we long for heaven and yet, we long for things yet to take place here. I am so grateful that the Lord, in His infinite grace and mercy, cares for all that concerns us. And you have said plenty in your five minutes as your thoughts provoked me to think a bit more 🙂 Blessings!
I appreciate that, Joanne. I, too, am so grateful for His grace and mercy!
What a great post Jennifer. If I were to write about longing today, it would be a longing for Christians to be united these days. With all of the depravity in churches, politics, social media, etc., it feels like even the body of Christ is fighting with one another and it’s exhausting. Thanks for a deep post. It’s refreshing.
It is exhausting! The constant arguing and ugliness is overwhelming. Thanks for your kind comment, Debbie!
I really enjoyed reading this, Jennifer! I like the line that you wrote about realizing how precious salvation is. Also, you really captured two realms of longing- regarding the eternal and the here and now on earth that all of us earthly beings have.
Thank you, Maria. I always appreciate your comments!
What a beautiful post, Jennifer. Thank you for making me realize how precious my salvation is.
Coming from FMF #16
You are welcome, Michele…and so glad you stopped by today!
Nice to meet you, Jennifer. I enjoyed reading your post.
Longing for Heaven is definitely a noble pursuit.; as long as we are serving God while we are still on Earth.

Yes, thanks Barb. I’m glad you stopped by my blog today!
Thank you so much for your words on the precious gift of our salvation. ‘Amazing grace…..how precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed.
Yes indeed, Beverley. Thanks for your sweet comment here!
A few times I have pondered these mysteries – what the angels do and don’t know or haven’t experienced personally.
He made us a little lower than the angels – such a lofty place he put humans in his creation…
Thank you for helping me reflect from a new perspective on the marvel and joy of my salvation.
Your description of yourself resonates and reminds me a bit of me.
The Longong for heaven 👑📯✨ this I so understand, and it is blessed joy to be reassured this way.
God hugggg you Jennifer. What an absolutely vitalizing Post my friend.

Jennifer, that’s such a great reminder that our salvation is precious, our relationship with Him is precious and angels understand that more than we do. Thanks for sharing.
Kath, your FMF neighbour at #11 this week. And thanks for reading my blog post this week!
