I have to admit….I am beginning to realize there really are some perks to this empty-nest situation. For instance – the other day I was on my way home when I passed this young teenager obviously walking home from the bus stop. She was carrying her (…start horror scene music here..) science project (woman screams “Ahhhhh!” here) – she had the solar system, the board…the works! I immediately thought WOO HOO!! (…begin happy feet music here!) I never again have to assist in any way with another school science project! Can I just say again – YIPPEE!!

To all those science teachers who were involved in my children’s lives over the years (and I do love you all), I mean this in the nicest way…but WOO HOO – no more science projects!! Around our house…math and sciences were not exactly the favorite subjects. In fact, they were often downright torturous!! (Now, give any of us, a grammar test…or even a written essay – and we were good to go.) But there was never anything worse than the dreaded science project to push the academic stress level straight over the top.

So, please excuse me while I do just a tiny happy dance as I remind myself I will never have to be involved with a science project again – WOOTY HOO!!

Oh, and if anyone thinks I am forgetting my most beautiful Miss Roo…..of course, I’d be willing to sacrifice a kidney for her but as for any far-off science projects – her daddy is a rocket scientist (literally) and so, she’s got it covered!! (Not to mention, she is brilliant!)

  1. hahahahaha! I know my parents (especially my dad) hated science fair projects but they probably hated research papers (my mom) more because one of them usually ended up typing it for us (before the computer age)!

  2. Jennifer!

I owe you a bit of an apology. Let me preface this by saying that when I comment on other people’s blogs, it’s often before the crack of dawn, so my brain is sound asleep. Well, that being said, it just occured to me that I commented on the picture of your daughter and grandbaby the other day and said that the two of YOU looked great! I didn’t realize at the time that it was your daughter and granddaughter…DUH! Please overlook my mistake! I was completely out of it! They are as cute as ever!

Now, about the whole empty nest thing…I’ve heard it does have it’s perks. I never cared for science projects, so I’ll be glad when they’re a thing of the past, too!

  3. You’re too funny.

I won’t have an empty nest for a LONG time. I do have an 18 year old, but I also have a 1 year old. Hee hee…. I’ll be good and OLD before I hit that phase of life.

Since you’re there, I’m so glad you can appreciate things like NO MORE SCIENCE PROJECTS! ha!

    Have a great day!

  4. Hi Jen! I was going to respond to you by writing an email and then I realized I can just send a response here! I haven’t blogged before so I just signed up and created an identity. Not very creative one I know 🙂

Anyways, I smiled when I read your blog today because I too was awful at science projects and NEVER enjoyed when they came around. They stressed me out all the time! Riley is so lucky to have a daddy who will be able to do them easily. I wonder who she will take after…mommy who is totally grammar/reading/writing or daddy who is science and math!

  5. Jennifer, Thank you for the comment on my poem today. I find a poem can release something inside of me, and set it free. (:>)

I giggled at your post, and how you were rejoicing over never having to do science projects again with your kids. I agree,…they were not fun. I don't miss the daily stresses that come along with raisng a family,…but I sure do miss my three sweet daughters,..and having them with me everyday.

My youngest daughter is 36, and she stopped by today for a little visit,…and I treasured each minute that she was here. I just never get to see here that much these days.

Empty nests can make the mama bird feel lonely at times. But I am enjoying life with my dear husband. He is so good to me.

Have a good Lord's Day tomorrow.

  6. Jennifer, It’s Linda again. I just read about Tyler and my heart goes out to you. 4 years ago last November we lost our 6 year old granddaughter Anna and we too look forward to seeing her again in heaven.

“This world is not my home,…I’m just a passin’ through. My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue. The angels beckon me from Heaven’s open door, and I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.”

Keep on looking up sweet Jennifer!

  7. At least there is hope for the future…we just finished our FIRST of I am sure MANY to come…

We are enjoying the Cherry Blossoms as well – so beautiful!!

  8. THERE are many things that I LOVE about the empty nest….when they visit…it’s great! When they depart…it’s quiet again..(7 grandkids now!) and THAT Is GREAT! (do I sound utterly selfish???)

    I loved reading this!
