Happy Monday morning! Just a quick hello and nod to the week ahead. I had (mentally) planned to do a “Three Things about the Weekend” post but, quite honestly, there was nothing of note about this past weekend. It was a beautiful sunny weekend. I felt productive, and we had a couple yummy meals but, all in all, it was a rather ordinary weekend. We did survive a quick errand to Walmart – definitely worth noting. I do not enjoy shopping there and usually avoid doing so; however, the craft supplies (that I often use for Junior Church) are so cheap there. For the intented purpose, it is hard to justify getting your pompoms, glitter, feathers or craft yarn anywhere else. And the candy was on clearance:)
Speaking of yarn, our craft yesterday came out really cute! I never take pictures of our artistic work, but I should. We have a lot of fun and get quite creative in the short amount of time we have for making masterpieces. Everyone works on the same project but they all look so unique. I love it. I’m headed to the church this afternoon for ASL class…perhaps I’ll get some pictures. And, yes, I am still plugging away and trying to learn ASL – American Sign Language. I’m curious – but did you realize that sign language is not universal? In the beginning, I was completely surprised to be told that. But, okay. However, there is BSL, or British Sign Language. Huh? Surely all English speaking countries would share the same sign language. Right? Apparently not. Maybe it is just me, but I find that beyond curious.
That rabbit trail covered…and with not a lot more to ramble on about this Monday morning, let me leave you with three questions. Just for discussion’s sake. Pick one and answer in the comments. I look forward to it. And I hope you will come back on Wednesday when I will have more of an actual post with this month’s Currently thoughts. Thanks for stopping by….here’s to a beautiful and blessed week ahead!!
1 – What is one thing you would like to learn but would require really stretching yourself (or your brain cells) to do? I feel like this with my ASL classes. I would love to learn (perhaps, relearn) French as well, but working on two new languages at the same – a bit too much of stretch for me!
2 – Speaking of languages (I love languages!), which “new to you” language would you like to learn? As much as I love languages, words and grammar, I don’t think I have a natural inclination for learning new ones. Some people pick up a new language quickly and easily. I am not one of those people. Sigh. I often wish it were my gift:)
3 – What do you consider your gift? Yes, I wish I could speak mulitple languages. I also wish I could play the piano by ear. That would be incredibly fun. But neither of those are my gifts. I have been told (since I was in middle school) that I have the gift of teaching. After years of protesting, I guess I would have to agree:) And would organizing things be considered a gift….because I can organize a pantry, linen closet or junk drawer like a professional!!:) Just sayin. How about you??
Ok, I am shocked and not in a good way about there being ASL and BSL. Why could´t it be universal?? I speak a bit of German. It was my minor in college but I do not speak it fluently. I would love to speak French. I did take two years of French in high school and I retained a few words and phrases but I can´t speak it conversationally at all. It´s such a pretty language, especially when compared with German! Abby speaks French fluently and I just love to hear her talk. Fun questions, Jennifer and have a great Monday… and take pictures of your projects 🙂
I’ll answer #3 for myself. I also have a gift for teaching (I have been told), but I have also been told that I have the gift of encouragement. I truly enjoy doing both, but in this season of life, encouragement seems to be the one I have opportunities to use the most.
I believe I have the gift of patience, organization and attention to detail. Sometimes these gifts serve me well and other times not so much. They can annoy other people.
IT is my weak spot. I could do with learning how to better use this technology without needing the rest of my techi savvi family on hand to bail me out all the time.
Oh boy – you and me both! IT is such a joy-drainer for me. So thankful for my IT assistants here at home as well!:)
I know everyone has a gift but I have never had a clear indication of what that gift was so I can’t answer #3.
#1 – I asked the Holy Spirit to use me and now I’m a discussion group leader with BSF. This has reignited a new revival within my soul as when I first accepted Jesus 40 years ago! Now all I want to do is study the Bible! I know many may think I’m annoying. 🤦🏼♀️
#2- I’d like to brush up on Hebrew. My husband and I are part of a Tikvah group, where we minister to the local Jewish community. It’s been such a blessing and while no one has yet to accept their messiah, we’ve had no negative reactions – only the beginnings of a friendship!
Debby – that is exciting that God allowed you to be a BSF leader. I know that must be rewarding in so many ways. And, you go girl, with learning/brushing up on Hebrew. I know that would be a blessing but seems way beyond me!!:)
I would love to be able to play the piano – it must be lovely to be able to sit down and just play a tune.
I started learning Spanish via that app Duolingo when we were in lockdown – I really enjoyed it but know that a year later I had reached my limit – grammar always trips me up! After that I tried French to see how much I remembered from school days and was amazed how much I still recalled.
I do enjoy baking and am always ‘that’ person who volunteers to bake a cake for a raffle/community tea. I probably bake a cake most weeks – which may explain why my waistline is staying the same size 😉
Grammar really does bog things down when learning a language – even when learning sign language! We spent an entire class this week discussing the types of verbs and when to use them. Ugh. My head was hurting. By the by, what is a spatial verb??? A cake a week sounds like a brilliant idea, Deb!!
Yes, I would love to see the little projects you do at church. Please consider taking pictures to share with us!!
My great, great grandmother was deaf before American Sign Language was developed. Her family had their own alphabet to use to talk with her. My grandmother showed me when I was a little girl and I’ve never forgotten. Seems like a unified, single sign language would be beneficial rather than having ASL and BSL and XYZSL.
I am pretty much self-taught in Spanish after living in Panama. Then always had many bilingual, ESL (English as a Second Language) learners as a librarian. My Spanish isn’t pretty but I get my point across. Have been doing Duolingo for over a year and it has helped me speak more fluently.
A gift I wish I had – can play the piano but gave up playing and struggle to play now. I would like to be able to sit down and take off playing. A gift I think I have – rapport with children.
