Happy Thursday. Here it is ten in the morning and I have yet to write today’s post. Not for lack of trying or thinking. Trust me, I have been overthinking (something I do quite well, actually!) but still nothing. I had hoped to be inspired by Marsha’s 10 on the 10th post idea. Instead, I was stymied. She wanted to know ten diamonds in our life right now. Ten diamonds? As in, actual diamonds? Because your friend here has very little “real” jewelry and certainly does not have ten diamond pieces.
I do have my engagement and wedding rings. So, there’s that. By the way, do you still wear your originial ring/rings? I am surprised, even a bit amazed, how many of my friends have changed their wedding rings. For a variety of reasons (yes, one friend even lost hers down the sink drain…like something from an I Love Lucy episode). I love my original ring…and it still fits:) It is gold and I will admit to a time when I thought I wanted a white gold ring, but I am so glad that idea passed. I’m thrilled to have the original that my husband designed on his own and had made for me.
Speaking of rings, I do have this family heirloom ring that belonged to my grandmother. I don’t know a lot about stones, etc but am wondering if anyone knows what type of ring this might be? I suppose I should take it to a jeweler but I have never really been concerned with having it appraised or otherwise checked. The value to me is sentimental. It does not currently fit but I do sometimes wonder if I would like to wear it? I also have a ring from my other grandmother. It was her “grandmother’s ring” with the five birthstones for each of her grandchildren. That one also remains in a box with (the few) other pieces of jewelry that I do not wear. Do you remember when mother’s rings and/or grandmother’s rings were so popular? Um, I have one of those mother’s rings. I really like it, actually, as the stones go together well. Two sapphires and a diamond in the middle. I do wear it but not often. I’m not wearing it now. The band is very thin, and dainty, and my fingers are anything but dainty. I’ll leave it at that.
Other than rings, I have one pair of emerald earrings. When I am ever going to wear in emerald earrings?? They also live in the box of special jewelry. I am an earring girl, to be sure, but I love fun earrings. I also have a weakness for oversized earrings. Not huge but big enough to be noticed:) In the last month or so, I have been trying to wear smaller earrings. And more simple earrings. More understated. Apparently, the influencers had convinced me that simple hoops were a bit more refined. Perhaps classy. And I want to be as classy as the next woman “of my age.” I bought several new pairs of earrings. Hoops in both silver and in gold. Some thick and others quite dainty. But I really missed my colored, longer – and funner – earrings! Sometimes you just have to ignore the influencers! LOL By the way, have I mentioned that I really like green?!:)
As much as I love earrings, I wear very few necklaces or bracelets. Many years ago, I wore a pearl necklace (not real but very pretty) every day. That was before children…ha. Now, I do not like to wear necklaces. I try. I really do and often I think my outfit would look better with a cute necklace but I just do not like wearing one. I also used to wear bracelets. Every day. Multiple bracelets. And I still like bracelets. I just forget about them and, if I were to wear one, I would prefer it on my left hand but that is where I wear my watch. So, no bracelet for me most days.
I suppose this post really has no direction….or even significant purpose but, for today, that is okay. If nothing else, I enjoyed pulling out my little box of treasures. But, for now, I will put it back on the bottom shelf in my office. My shelf unit of special things. Maybe I will share those one day. But enough for today. I will be heading out soon to join my crocheting friends. I actually have something to bring and share this month. I made a bunny. Oh yes I did. She still needs eyes (someone is bringing me black yarn today) but once I finish that, I just might share a photo with you. Until then, have a great Thursday. Enjoy your week ahead. We have a family birthday on Saturday. Hooray! That is always fun. Any excuse for cake!!
Come back on Monday. I’ll have a bit more to say about my favorite birthday guy! Thanks for stopping by –
I loved reading your post even though I stymied you about diamonds. I’m wondering if you saw the first post where I left off the actual prompt. Anyway, I do remember mother’s rings and grandmother’s rings. My mom had a mother’s ring, but I don’t know what happened to it. I always wanted one, but I could never find the kind I liked. Eventually, my husband bought me a necklace which is quite nice except they put the bar with the birthstones on backward so I have to clasp it the wrong way…does that make sense? My mother-in-law had 11 children so we couldn’t get her a ring. We did find a tree with 11 places for birthstones. We had one made for her and gave it to her for Christmas one year. I think my husband got it when she passed.
I say wear your big statement earrings if they make you happy. Life is too short to wear what influencers say you should wear. I know dainty is supposed to be in, but I love big statement necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. So, I wear them. We should love what we wear! I’m so glad you participated in the 10 on the 10th!

Hi Jennifer 🙂 You sound much like me…I don’t wear much jewelry. But I still wear my wedding ring and can’t imagine why people wear other rings in place of their original wedding ring. I’ve always wondered about that! I recently had to have mine stretched a bit, but I would never think about not wearing it.
I don’t wear big earrings, but I love your dangle earrings and hope you will not listen to the “influencers”. You look great and if it’s your signature look, then don’t listen to the “experts” 🙂
I do have an heirloom ring that has been passed down from several women in my family. The jeweler told me it’s one that should be kept safe and my thought on that is the same as I feel about buying a Cadillac and keeping it in the garage. What’s the point?!! I wear it on special occasions and plan to pass it down to my oldest granddaughter one day.
My guess is that ring is made up of Aquamarine stones, which is the stone for March and my birthday. Very pretty.
Three pregnancies caused my ring finger to swell up (and back down) and repeated each time. Finally it was where my original rings were tight enough that I feared the day would come when I could not get them off at all. My husband bought me new rings.
Then when my husband died, I continued to wear them as a defense to help people know I was not ‘available.” Then when I was open to MAYBE a new relationship, I wore other rings in the place of my wedding set.
When my current husband asked me what kind of ring I wanted, I asked for a simple wide band of white gold with yellow gold on the outside edges. No stones this time. I wanted something that would be comfortable at all times and that would not twirl around my finger (as a stone can do). I love it.
I really like your photo / header on this post, so bright and cheery. I wear my original engagement ring and wedding band and an anniversary band. I also cannot wear “fake” jewelry, and I do wear my fancy stuff. Why? Because life is short. smiles.
ANYWAYS, thanks for the many smiles. I totally get what you are saying. Have a beautiful weekend, Jennifer.
Ha! When I saw the prompt for 10 on the 10th, I was thinking ‘diamonds’ as in jewels in my life, not gemstones. Not sure I I would have 10 real diamonds, either. But I wear my original wedding and engagement rings every single day.
Your grandmother’s ring is pretty. Can’t tell if the stones are translucent or more opaque like jade. I have a ring of my mom’s that is missing a prong on one of the sets. Need to have it repaired so I can enjoy wearing it without worry.
I love reading your posts–I feel as if we are visiting as friends. Thank you for these lovely moments away from the news.
Ah, I love that, Karen. Love that we can visit as friends through our blogs. Isn’t that interesting…and wonderful, all at the same time?? Thanks for stopping by this morning!
I have a couple of rings that belonged to my mum and nan but they are too small for my fingers to wear them. I do wear a wedding band but not the original (which I still have) but my fingers got bigger over the years until the metal started to squeeze too tight. Thank you for sharing about your rings.
