I mentioned yesterday that the theme for our Mother/Daughter banquet was “His Eye is on the Sparrow”….and our guest speaker shared the hymn story behind that song. Apparently the writer of the hymn was greatly impacted by a couple that both daily faced enormous physical challenges. In spite of their circumstances, this couple lived each day joyfully and contented. When asked how they did it, the hymn writer was told, “His eye is on the sparrow…and I know He watches me.” She never forgot those words.
Watching the Sparrows
I have always enjoyed this hymn and when things are difficult – especially when I find myself not in control – this song can be a comfort. But it is more than just a reassurance that God is close by, watching over me and concerned about even the little things. This song is about genuine contentment. Contented no matter what the day may hold or what challenges, frustrations, disappointments may lie ahead. I like to hum this song and “assume” that God is – as I hum – “fixing” everything to make life easy again. However, I need to be content even in the midst of difficult days.
His Eye Is On the Sparrow
Why should I feel discouraged,
Why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely
And long for Heav’n and home,
When Jesus is my portion?
My constant Friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.
I sing because I’m happy,
I sing because I’m free,
For His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.
Let not your heart be troubled,
His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness,
I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path He leadeth
But one step I may see:
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.
Morning Jenn,
I love that song too. It is so neat to think of how the Lord takes care of all his woodland creatures and that he cares for them, and how much more so, is His eyes on us, and how great his care and concern for us.
I am alway amazed at how the Lord seems to care about the lil details of my life. I just love love love that!! So glad you enjoyed your Tea so much, and it spoke to your heart so much. God knows just what we need when we need it, I just love that too!
He truly is so good to us!!
Hope you have a spectacular Day
Sweetie,
Love and Blessings, Nellie
P.S. Stop by and visit- I have missed you lately.
What a comforting song! Another one that I like along the same lines is "Consider the Lillies". One of the lines is"Consider the sparrow, they don't plant or sow, but they're fed by the Master who watches them grow."If He cares enough to take care of them, surely He will care for us, His children.
Do you know that I used to sing this song to my girls as I rocked them when they were babies? It's always been a favorite of mine!
Hi! Oh how I love this song. It is going to be in my head today now I know…and that is such a good thing…There is just nothing like KNOWING that He watches and cares about every little detail of our lives isn't there? Whatever in the world would we do without that comfort? Have a wonderful day my friend…HUGS, Debbie

My girls, when they were quite small, would climb into the apple tree branches and sing that song to me! Ya gotta luv that! ;~D
Blessings!
This is such a powerful hymn and a beautiful reminder to us. I love to hum this and be reminded that even when I have a churning mind and hurting heart that God knows and He sees. What a comfort and encouragement. Thanks for sharing this today.
I believe there is no part of creation that God is not controling and interested in. The little sparrow and us. What a contrast. Humbly.
I have always loved that song too, as it provides so much comfort. I am adding the words to my journal where I keep all my favorite sayings, verses, etc. The words are so special. God is truly a comfort and a blessing in my life. Hope you have a wonderful week. Love & blessings from NC!
